Research papers on Autism and ADHD in women especially in recognition of changing female hormones are limited. I recognise and believe the traits often associated with ADHD and autism, can be severely impacted by changing female sex hormone levels. Neurodiverse traits will have always existed but become more pronounced in perimenopause or other female hormonal changes.
More women are becoming aware of their neurodiversity, later in life. For some of us, it’s when our children receive a diagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism that we begin to ask, am I neurodivergent too?
My own personal journey has deepened my empathy and informed my therapeutic approach. Viewing therapy through a neurodivergent lens, I understand that every individual has a different way of processing the world and has unique stressors and strengths. For others, increased awareness in the media, in online spaces or among people we know exposes us to the idea that those patterns we’ve noticed in ourselves might fit a neurodivergent profile.
For some of us, stress, hormonal changes or life circumstances mean we reach a place of neurodivergent burnout, and we don’t have the energy to continue masking anymore. It can be a big relief to realise what we thought were personal failings, isolating quirks or things that made us ‘different’ have a name, and that others are in the same boat.
It can also be a huge identity shift, as we reconsider the messages we've received about who we are and how we should be. It can throw up all sorts of questions about how we relate to other people, how we communicate with friends and family, and how we acknowledge and meet our needs as neurodiverse people. Whatever the impact of suspected or diagnosed neurodiversity on your sense of self, your relationships or your life, together we can find a way forward.
I bring my understanding of neurodiversity, my experience as a wellbeing coach and psychotherapist, tools from yoga, somatic body-based work, Polyvagal Theory and meditation to help you the ability and belief with yourself to have the tools to exist in the world with greater confidence and ease.
A familiar journey I’ve experienced myself, it's a deep pleasure to hold space for other neurodiverse women navigating these waters. I will create space for you - just as you are - to enable you to thrive.
The first step is for us to have a free 30-minute discovery Zoom video call, which will help to ensure that I am the right therapist for you. Then, with your consent, we will work together to establish the best approach to give you the support you need.
My therapy sessions are relaxed and informal. I will never judge you; I am only here to support you to find balance and equilibrium and make positive changes.
Together, we will work at your pace, and you will learn a unique set of tools to help you cope with any challenges that may arise in the future. Ideally, a minimum of six sessions is recommended.
After your discovery call you will be sent an email with a new Calendly invitation to book and confirm your first session. Payment is taken at this time.
You will receive a questionnaire about you, which can act as the foundation for your first session. We can and will fill this out in more detail as we work together. This is asked to be returned 48 hours before your first session.
